Stadia in different Districts Headquarters
Gorkha Stadium At Lebong, Darjeeling
This is perhaps one of the very few stadiums located at an altitude of about 6,000 ft. in the hills of Darjeeling. The stadium is presently under the control of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. There is a standard playground along with gallery for about 600 spectators on one side. Total expenditure incurred so far is Rs.82.96 lakhs, out of which Central Government grant has been Rs.40.00 lakhs.
The stadium is in the headquarters of Dakshin Dinajpur District which has been a predominantly rural backward district. The construction of galleries was completed in phases by different agencies like Zilla Parishad, Balurghat Municipality, PWD. The stadium is under the control of Dakshin Dinajpur District Sport Association. There is a Board of Management constituted by the Department of Sports for undertaking day-to-day management of the stadium. The present seating accommodatioi is 3600 spectators in the galleries. The total area of land in the stadium complex is 6.97 acres which has been allocated by the Govt, of West Bengal to the Board of Management.
Cooch Behar Stadium
The stadium is located in the district headquarter. Present spectator capacity is about 7,000. There are two number of galleries to accommodate the spectators. Inside fencing work of the stadium has been completed. There are two number of dormitory halls for accommodation of players. Allotment of funds received from Department of Sports (Rs.36.48 lakhs), Development and Planning Department (Rs.20.00 lakhs), MP's grant (Rs.30.00 lakhs) totalling thereby Rs.86.48 lakhs.
Malda Indoor Stadium
Total fund received for the Indoor Stadium at Malda is to the tune of Rs.25.75 lakhs, out of which Rs.20.00 lakhs was given by District Planning Committee. Total expenditure incurred so far is Rs.24.20 lakhs. Size of the playing ground is 4200 sq. ft. Present spectator capacity is 1700. Total estimated cost is Rs.1.63 crore.
The stadium is located on the heart of the town just next to Howrah Sarat Sadan in Howrah Maidan area. The total expenditure incurred for construction of the stadium has been Rs.62.00 lakhs so far, out of which the State Government grant comes to Rs. 15.60 lakhs. Central Government provided a grant of Rs.5.00 lakhs and Howrah Municipal Corporation provided a grant of Rs.38.80 lakhs. Two blocks of concrete galleries have been constructed on the southern portion of the stadium having capacity of 3,000 each. The playfield has an effective drainage system. There exist toilets, general lighting arrangement in the galleries and drinking water supply system. A youth hostel has also been constructed below the galleries maintained by Youth Services Department. Tht total spectator capacity in the gallery is 6,000. The size of the playground is 135 metre x 73.5 metres. There is a proposal to construct further galleries on the eastern and western side with additional capacity of about 16,000 along with a Clubhouse etc. The total estimated cost is Rs. 300.00 lakhs.
Howrah Indoor Stadium at Dumurjola
An Indoor Stadium has recently been constructed within the Howrah Municipal Corporation area at Dumurjola. Total expenditure incurred so far for the construction is about Rs.2.38 crore, out of which State Government has provided Rs. 13.00 lakhs. The Indoor Stadium is of National standard having wooden floor area of 40 metres x 28 metres. Spectator capacity in the galleries is 3,000. There are provisions for the following games:- Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Handball and Volleyball. There are facilities like Conference Room, Coaching Room, Lecture Room, Equipments Facilities etc. within the stadium complex. Some items of work are yet to be completed. Date of commencement of construction was on 13-2-93 and the date of inauguration was on 19-12-97.
Berhampore Stadium, Dist.: Murshidabad
The Stadium was constructed in the district headquarter by the P.W.D., Berhampore Division - I. The total expenditure incurred by Executive engineer, P.W.D. was Rs. 39.69 lakhs, out of which Rs. 9.90 lakhs was related by District Planning Committee through Zilla Parishad.
The foundation stone of the stadium complex was laid by Hon'ble Chief Minister, West Bengal in 1992.The total expenditure incurred so far for construction of the stadium is Rs. 1.70 crore. Out of this, Rs. 1.05 crore has come from M.P.'s quota and Rs. 25.00 lakhs have come from District Plan Allocation. Siliguri & Jalpaiguri Development Authority has contributed Rs. 10.00 lakhs and the Department of Sports has contributed Rs. 11.00 lakhs. There is a VIP gallery with seating capacity of 2000. There are 17 more single tire galleries with a seating capacity of 500 each. The total seating capacity, therefore, is 10500. The space below VIP gallery is being used as an Equipment room, Store room, Billiard room, Physical conditioning room, Toilets etc. There is also a Changing room and a Sports Hostel having accommodation of 80 boys/girls.
The total expenditure incurred so far for construction of the Bankura Stadium is only Rs. 7.45 lakhs. Out of this, Department of Sports provided Rs. 1.15 lakhs and Rs. 5.00 lakhs was provided by District Planning Committee, M.P.'s fund etc. The present infrastructural facilities available are a Football Ground, Volleyball Court, Kho Kho and Kabadi Court and a Cricket Pitch and a Swimming Tank. Swimming Tank of size 25 metres x 25 metres. The spectator capacity at present is about 6,000 and the size of the playground is 110 x 75 yards.
